The diamond Consortium workshops aimed to encourage the open exchange of information and sharing of resources.

WORKSHOP 1: Measuring outcomes in depression research

Date: Friday 13 February 2004
Location: Lecture Theatre No. 2, Kathleen Syme Education Centre, 251 Faraday Street, Carlton.
The first consortium workshop focused on the need for agreed outcome measures for depression related research. The workshop consisted of a number of presentations by consortium members and a discussion around the challenges of comparing research outcomes when the measures differ. The outcome of the workshop was agreement that researchers would share methodologies and outcomes of their research. The presentations from this workshop are listed below:

  9. Jane Sims: UPLIFT: Linking the health and leisure sectors: using physical activity in the management of depressed older people
  10. Professor Merilyn Annells & Russell Nunn: Depression in Elderly Community-Dwelling Nursing Clients
  11. A/Professor Barry McGrath: Existing and Planned Research into Depression by Staff of the Department of Rural Health

Workshop 2: Consumer and carer involvement in research

Date: Monday 25 October 2004
Location: 200 Berkeley Street, Carlton

The second workshop aimed to address the challenges researchers face in engaging consumers and carers both during design and implementation of research. The workshop addressed:

  1. Consumer and carer participation philosophy, ethical principles, definitions and participatory models
  2. The NHMRC Statement on Consumer and Community Participation in Health and Medical Research
  3. Methods and practice for consumer and carer participation including planning, identification of consumers and carers, recruitment, identification of best participatory models for the research project, how to provide ongoing support for consumers and self assessment and/or evaluation.

The speakers at this workshop were:

  1. Dr Kathy Griffiths: Centre for Mental Health Research, The Australian National University, Canberra
  2. Sandy Robinson: Director of the National Resource Centre for Consumer Participation in Health
  3. Tere Dawson: Senior Project and Policy Coordinator, Health Issues Centre

Workshop 3: Costs and costing for economic analysis of health interventions

Date: Wednesday 6 April 2005

Location: 200 Berkeley Street, Carlton

Dr Dan Chisholm facilitated this workshop drawing on his experience as a mental health economist at the Department of Health System Financing, Expenditure and Resource Allocation and the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, World Health Organisation (WHO) Geneva. The workshop was based on the two papers published by Dr Chisholm below:

WORKSHOP 4: Resource allocation for primary mental health care

Date: Monday 11 April 2005, 3-5 pm

The diamond Consortium held a round table discussion with policy makers chaired by Professor Ian Hickie (Brain and Mind Research Institute at the University of Sydney and clinical advisor to beyondblue) to share the latest WHO perspective on resource allocation for primary mental health care. The workshop consisted of the following presentations and discussion:

  1. Prof Jane Gunn: Introducing the diamond Consortium and longitudinal study
  2. Dr Dan Chisholm: WHO work on resource allocation for primary mental health care
  3. Round-table discussion

WORKSHOP 5: Analysis protocols for the diamond project team and the maternal health study group

Date: Friday 11 November, 2005

A meeting was held between the diamond project team and the maternal health study group (from Latrobe University) to present and discuss analysis protocols for both studies. The meeting was attended by 15 people and Professor John Carlin (Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne) an expert in longitudinal analysis, gave a presentation on undertaking cohort analysis in large scale studies.

 

WORKSHOP 6: Problem solving treatment workshop

Date: Monday 3 December 2007

Location: 200 Berkeley St

Associate Professor Evelyn van Weel-Baumgarten from the Department of General Practice, University Medical Centre Nijmegen presented an overview of the latest research on problem solving treatment and facilitated an interactive workshop.
